Description
This refreshing Homemade Lemonade recipe combines freshly squeezed lemon juice with sugar and water to create a perfectly balanced, classic beverage. It is easy to make and ideal for serving chilled on a warm day, garnished with lemon slices for an extra touch of citrus zest.
Ingredients
Sugar and Lemons
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 10 lemons (for 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice; use more if needed)
Water
- 8 cups water
Garnish
- Extra lemon slices for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Slice Lemons: Slice two of the lemons into thin slices, carefully removing all seeds and discarding them to avoid bitterness in the lemonade.
- Mash Sugar and Lemon Slices: In a large bowl, use a potato masher to mash the granulated sugar together with the lemon slices until the sugar is fully moistened, which should take about 1 minute. This helps to release lemon oils and flavor.
- Juice Remaining Lemons: Juice the remaining 8 lemons to yield about 2 cups of fresh lemon juice. Use extra lemons if necessary to reach this quantity.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and 8 cups of water to the bowl containing the sugar and lemon slices. Stir the mixture thoroughly until all the sugar dissolves completely, which should take 1 to 2 minutes.
- Strain the Mixture: Strain the lemonade through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher or large bowl to remove lemon pulp and slices. Press gently on the solids to extract all the juice, then discard the solids.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the lemonade until cold or serve immediately over ice. Garnish with additional lemon slices if desired for added visual appeal and flavor.
Notes
- Make sure to remove all seeds from the lemon slices to keep the lemonade smooth and prevent bitterness.
- Adjust the sugar amount if you prefer a sweeter or more tart lemonade.
- Use fresh lemons for the best natural flavor; bottled lemon juice will not provide the same vibrant taste.
- For an extra refreshing touch, add fresh mint leaves or a splash of sparkling water when serving.
- Store any leftover lemonade in the refrigerator and consume within 2-3 days for optimal freshness.
