Description

This Hamburger Steaks in Creamy Dill Sauce recipe features juicy, pan-seared beef patties smothered in a rich and velvety dill-infused cream sauce. Perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner, it combines simple ingredients like ground beef, onions, garlic, and fresh dill for a flavorful and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Burger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion (grated)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion (diced)
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill (plus more for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep the hamburger mixture: Grate one yellow onion into a large bowl. Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix everything together gently with your hands until just combined to keep the patties tender.
  2. Shape the steaks: Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then press down with your hand or a spatula to form patties about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick. Set them aside.
  3. Prep aromatics: Finely dice the second yellow onion, mince the garlic cloves, and chop the fresh dill. These will form the base of the sauce.
  4. Sear the patties: Heat olive oil and butter over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until well browned and partially cooked through. Transfer the patties to a clean plate.
  5. Cook the sauce base: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to low and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add salt, pepper, and flour, stirring constantly to incorporate and form a roux.
  6. Add broth and simmer: Pour in the low sodium chicken broth, stirring while scraping up any browned bits from the skillet bottom. Let it simmer for 2 minutes to thicken slightly.
  7. Finish the sauce: Stir in heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then simmer for 1-2 minutes until it starts to thicken.
  8. Simmer steaks in sauce: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Simmer for 5-6 minutes, spooning sauce over them occasionally, until the patties are fully cooked through and heated.
  9. Serve: Plate the hamburger steaks and spoon plenty of creamy dill sauce over the top. Garnish with extra chopped dill and freshly grated black pepper. Enjoy your comforting and flavorful meal!

Notes

  • Use fresh dill for the best flavor; dried dill will not give the same vibrant taste.
  • Ensure not to overmix the beef mixture to keep the patties tender and juicy.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, though cooking times may vary.
  • If desired, serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to complement the creamy sauce.
  • Make sure the skillet is hot enough for searing to develop a nice crust on the patties.
