Description

Ground Beef Stick of Butter Rice is a comforting American casserole featuring savory lean ground beef, tender long grain rice cooked in rich beef broth and condensed French onion soup, all topped with generous slices of buttery goodness. This easy one-dish meal bakes to a perfect blend of flavors and textures, making it ideal for a hearty dinner.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (see notes below)

Liquids and Broth

  • 14.5 ounce can beef broth (can use low or no sodium)
  • 10 ounce can condensed French onion soup (can use low sodium)

Grains

  • 1 cup long grain white rice

Fats

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cut into thin slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set the oven temperature to 425°F and prepare an 8×8 inch baking dish by spraying it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook ground beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook and crumble it for 8 to 10 minutes or until no pink remains. Drain off any excess grease once fully cooked.
  3. Combine ingredients: Place the cooked beef in the prepared baking dish. Add the beef broth, condensed French onion soup, and long grain white rice to the dish. Stir everything together thoroughly to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  4. Add butter: Arrange the thin slices of unsalted butter on top of the beef and rice mixture, spreading them evenly for a rich buttery flavor throughout the casserole.
  5. Bake covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes to allow the rice to start absorbing the liquid and cooking evenly.
  6. Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Serve hot immediately.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and ensure a balanced flavor.
  • If desired, low or no sodium beef broth and condensed French onion soup can be used for a healthier sodium level.
  • You can substitute unsalted butter with salted if preferred, but adjust additional salt accordingly.
  • This recipe serves 4 and pairs well with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated up to 3 days and reheated thoroughly before serving.
