Description

These French Dip Sliders are a perfect party appetizer or family meal featuring tender roast beef, caramelized onions, and melty Swiss and provolone cheese on soft Hawaiian rolls, baked to perfection and served with a flavorful homemade au jus for dipping.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter (divided)
  • 2 small onions (or 1 large onion, thinly sliced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls
  • 1 pound thinly sliced roast beef (approximately 12-15 slices)
  • ½ cup Swiss cheese (shredded)
  • 9 slices provolone cheese

Optional

  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and season them with salt and pepper. Cook the onions, stirring frequently, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, then remove all but 2 tablespoons of the onions to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Make the Au Jus: Add the remaining butter and beef broth to the same skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat, then lower the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until the liquid reduces by nearly half, intensifying the flavor.
  3. Prepare the Baking Dish and Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and set it aside.
  4. Assemble the Sliders: Using a serrated knife, carefully slice the entire sheet of Hawaiian rolls horizontally to separate the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom halves in the prepared baking dish. Layer the reserved caramelized onions, shredded Swiss cheese, roast beef slices, and provolone cheese evenly over the bottom buns. then place the top halves of the buns over the layered ingredients.
  5. Butter the Tops: Melt the remaining butter along with the optional Worcestershire sauce either in the microwave or in a small saucepan over medium heat. Brush this flavorful butter mixture generously over the tops of the slider buns.
  6. Bake the Sliders: Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the sliders are heated through thoroughly.
  7. Serve: Remove the foil and serve the sliders hot, accompanied by the homemade au jus from the skillet for dipping, creating a delicious and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use thinly sliced roast beef for best texture and ease of layering.
  • Caramelizing the onions slowly enhances their sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • The au jus can be reheated and served warm alongside the sliders for dipping.
  • Optionally add a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the melted butter for brushing to add extra tanginess and depth.
  • For a crispier top, remove the foil for the last 5 minutes of baking.
  • These sliders can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before serving.
