Description

These Thai Basil Beef Rolls are a flavorful and quick appetizer or light meal featuring ground beef infused with garlic, ginger, and traditional Asian spices. Wrapped in soft tortillas or rice paper and loaded with fresh herbs and crunchy vegetables, they offer a delightful balance of savory, tangy, and spicy flavors complemented by a rich dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground chicken/turkey)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp Chinese 5-spice powder
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp Thai chili sauce
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

Roll & Garnish

  • 8 small flour tortillas or rice paper
  • 2 Persian cucumbers, julienned
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1 cup Thai basil (or Italian basil)
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • ½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped

Dipping Sauce

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp chili paste
  • 1 tsp lime zest
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, grated

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce mixture: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, Thai chili sauce, toasted sesame oil, and Chinese 5-spice powder. This mixture will add a rich, aromatic flavor to the beef filling.
  2. Cook the beef: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the ground beef until mostly cooked through. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Glaze the beef: Stir the prepared sauce mixture into the skillet with the beef. Continue cooking and stirring until the beef is nicely glazed and slightly caramelized, enhancing the taste and texture.
  4. Prepare the wraps: Warm the flour tortillas gently in a dry pan or microwave, or soften rice paper sheets by dipping them briefly in warm water until pliable, making them easy to roll without tearing.
  5. Assemble the rolls: Lay out each tortilla or rice paper sheet and add a portion of the glazed beef, then top with fresh herbs like cilantro and Thai basil, julienned cucumbers, chopped green onions, and a sprinkle of chopped roasted peanuts. Roll tightly to secure all elements inside.
  6. Make the dipping sauce: Whisk together honey, ketchup, chili paste, lime zest, lime juice, rice vinegar, tamari, grated ginger, and garlic in a small bowl. Serve the rolls warm accompanied by this tangy, spicy dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Ground chicken or turkey can be used as a lighter alternative to beef.
  • Rice paper provides a gluten-free option for wrapping the rolls.
  • Adjust the chili sauce and chili paste quantities to control heat levels according to your preference.
  • Roasted peanuts add crunch and can be substituted with cashews or omitted for nut allergies.
  • These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored wrapped tightly in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
