Description

These Mummy Rice Krispie Treats are a fun and festive Halloween dessert made by browning butter, melting marshmallows, and mixing them with Rice Krispies cereal to form a sticky base. The treats are then cut into rectangles, coated in white candy melts, and decorated with piped candy lines and candy eyes to create spooky mummy designs, perfect for parties or seasonal celebrations.

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 8 ounces salted butter (2 sticks or 1 cup)
  • 12 ounces Rice Krispies cereal (1 box)
  • 20 ounces marshmallows (about 80 large or 2 packs of 10 ounces each)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mummy Decoration

  • 2 bags white candy melts
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil (to thin candy melts)
  • 45 sprinkle eyes

Instructions

  1. Browning the Butter: In a large pot over medium heat, melt the salted butter until it turns golden brown, enhancing the flavor of the treats. Stir occasionally to prevent burning and watch carefully as the color changes.
  2. Adding Vanilla Extract: Once the butter is browned, remove from heat briefly and stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.
  3. Melting Marshmallows: Return the pot to low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir continuously with a wooden spoon, coating the marshmallows thoroughly in the browned butter until they melt into a smooth, creamy consistency similar to marshmallow cream.
  4. Mixing in Rice Krispies: Remove the pot from heat and quickly add the Rice Krispies cereal. Stir well until the mixture becomes very sticky and all the cereal is evenly coated.
  5. Shaping the Treats: Pour the sticky mixture into a buttered 13×9-inch cake pan. Use a spatula to spread it evenly, then press down firmly using parchment paper to create a level surface.
  6. Setting: Let the mixture sit undisturbed for 1 hour to set and firm up before cutting.
  7. Cutting Rectangles: After the treats have set, use a buttered knife to cut them into rectangular shapes, preparing them for decoration.
  8. Melting Candy Melts: In the microwave, melt one bag of white candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth. Add 1 tablespoon of canola oil to thin the candy melts for easier dipping and stir well to combine.
  9. Coating the Treats: Dip each Rice Krispie rectangle into the thinned white candy melts to fully coat them. Set aside to allow the coating to firm slightly.
  10. Preparing Piping Candy: Melt the second bag of white candy melts in the microwave similarly. Pour the melted candy into a piping bag and snip a small hole at the tip for decorating.
  11. Decorating the Mummy Bandages: Pipe horizontal and crisscross lines across each coated treat, resembling mummy bandages.
  12. Adding Eyes: Place two sprinkle eyes on each treat before the piped candy sets, giving a fun mummy face look.

Notes

  • Be sure to use parchment paper when pressing down the mixture to prevent sticking.
  • Browned butter adds a richer, nuttier flavor compared to melted butter.
  • Use canola oil sparingly to thin the candy melts without making them too runny.
  • Allow the candy coating to partially set between dipping and piping for best decorating results.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
