Description

Gooey Chocolate Butter Cake is a rich and decadent layered dessert featuring a dense chocolate cake base topped with a creamy, sweetened cream cheese layer infused with cocoa and vanilla, baked to perfection for a luscious, gooey texture.

Ingredients

Cake Layer

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs

Cream Cheese Layer

  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper to ensure easy removal of the cake later.
  2. Make the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix and softened butter. Mix until the butter is fully incorporated, creating a thick dough-like batter.
  3. Add Eggs to Batter: Add two of the eggs to the mixture and continue mixing until evenly combined; expect the batter to be thick and dense.
  4. Form Cake Base: Press the thick batter evenly into the bottom of the prepared parchment-lined baking pan, creating an even layer. Set aside.
  5. Prepare Cream Cheese Layer: In a separate medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and the remaining two eggs. Use a hand mixer to blend everything together until smooth and well mixed.
  6. Assemble Layers: Pour the creamy chocolate cream cheese mixture evenly over the prepared chocolate cake base layer in the pan.
  7. Bake the Cake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes. Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and allow the cake to cool completely before cutting to maintain its gooey texture.

Notes

  • Ensure the cream cheese is softened for easier mixing and a smoother cream cheese layer.
  • Using parchment paper helps to lift the cake easily without sticking.
  • Allow the cake to cool fully before cutting to prevent the gooey layers from running.
  • This cake is best served slightly chilled or at room temperature for the best texture.
  • For extra richness, use full-fat cream cheese.
