Ingredients
Flatbread Base
- 2 medium or 1 large baked flatbread or pizza crust
Cheeses
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded (or your favorite cheese)
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
Vegetables and Herbs
- 1 large Florida bell pepper (red, yellow, green, or a mix of ⅓ of all 3 colors), seeded and sliced thin
- 2 medium Florida tomatoes, sliced thin
- ¼ cup fresh basil, hand torn
- 5 cloves fresh garlic, minced
Other Ingredients and Seasoning
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Sea salt, to taste
- Fresh ground pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s ready for baking the flatbread.
- Prepare the flatbread base: Spread the olive oil evenly over the surface of the flatbread, then sprinkle the minced garlic on top, distributing it uniformly for a flavorful foundation.
- Add the first layer of cheese: Sprinkle about three-fourths of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the flatbread to create a cheesy base layer.
- Layer the vegetables: Arrange the thinly sliced Florida bell peppers and tomatoes evenly on top of the cheese to add color and fresh taste.
- Top with remaining cheese: Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the vegetables to help bind the toppings and add extra cheesiness.
- Season: Lightly season the flatbread with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance all the flavors.
- Bake: Place the flatbread on a cookie sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 7 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the flatbread from the oven and garnish with the hand-torn fresh basil leaves. Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- For a crispier crust, pre-bake the flatbread for 3-4 minutes before adding toppings.
- You can substitute mozzarella with provolone or fontina for a different flavor profile.
- Use fresh, ripe Florida tomatoes for the best taste and texture.
- If you prefer a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes before baking.
- This flatbread can be enjoyed as an appetizer, snack, or light meal alongside a salad.
