Description
A simple and foolproof homemade bread dough recipe that yields an incredibly soft, cloud-like loaf, perfect for sandwiches, rolls, or to enjoy on its own.
Ingredients
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour (500g)
- 2 teaspoons of salt (10g)
- 2 teaspoons of sugar (10g)
- 1½ tablespoons of dry yeast (15g) or 2 tablespoons of fresh yeast (30g)
- 1½ cups of warm water (about 98°F or 37°C) (350ml)
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (optional)
Instructions
- If using fresh yeast, dissolve it in the warm water. For dry yeast, mix it into the flour.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
- Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture or water. Stir to combine. Add vegetable oil if using.
- Turn out dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 to 1½ hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and shape it into desired loaf form.
- Place dough on a greased or parchment-lined pan, cover, and let it rise again for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- Use fresh yeast for optimal rise and flavor.
- For a chewier loaf, substitute with bread flour.
- Enhance with herbs, cheese, or sweet additions for variations.
- Dough can be refrigerated after the first rise for overnight use.
