Description
Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines the rich, saucy flavor of classic sloppy joes with the gooey, crispy indulgence of grilled cheese, creating a comforting and hearty sandwich perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for spreading
- 8 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or preferred type)
- 8 slices cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain the excess grease.
- Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until softened.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer until the mixture thickens.
- Remove the skillet from heat and set the sloppy joe mixture aside.
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- On the unbuttered side, layer a slice of cheese, a spoonful of the meat mixture, another slice of cheese, then top with a second slice of bread, buttered side out.
- Grill the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat, pressing slightly and flipping until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve hot, optionally slicing the sandwich in half.
Notes
- Use thick, sturdy bread like sourdough or Texas toast to prevent sogginess.
- Freshly sliced or shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
- Store leftover sandwiches in the fridge and reheat in a skillet or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
- The sloppy joe filling can be made ahead and frozen for up to 2 months.
