Description

Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines the rich, saucy flavor of classic sloppy joes with the gooey, crispy indulgence of grilled cheese, creating a comforting and hearty sandwich perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for spreading
  • 8 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or preferred type)
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain the excess grease.
  2. Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until softened.
  3. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer until the mixture thickens.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and set the sloppy joe mixture aside.
  5. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  6. On the unbuttered side, layer a slice of cheese, a spoonful of the meat mixture, another slice of cheese, then top with a second slice of bread, buttered side out.
  7. Grill the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat, pressing slightly and flipping until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  8. Serve hot, optionally slicing the sandwich in half.

Notes

  • Use thick, sturdy bread like sourdough or Texas toast to prevent sogginess.
  • Freshly sliced or shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Store leftover sandwiches in the fridge and reheat in a skillet or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
  • The sloppy joe filling can be made ahead and frozen for up to 2 months.
