Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper (or red), chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano (or Italian seasoning)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 6 hoagie-style buns or burger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it apart, until no longer pink.
- Drain excess grease, then add chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté until tender and fragrant.
- Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Stir in ketchup, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and oregano. Season with salt and pepper.
- Simmer the mixture until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Layer provolone cheese slices on top, cover briefly to melt.
- Spoon the mixture onto toasted buns and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use gluten-free buns and certified gluten-free Worcestershire for a gluten-free version.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 3–4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
- Reheat gently and add a splash of broth if needed.
