Description

Indulge in the rich, caramelized perfection of Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast, a make-ahead breakfast that combines creamy custard-soaked bread with a crunchy brûléed sugar topping—perfect for holidays or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of French bread, sliced into 1-inch thick pieces
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar, plus extra for the topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish and arrange the bread in a snug, single layer.
  2. In a bowl, whisk eggs, half-and-half, milk, vanilla, 2/3 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Pour custard evenly over bread; press gently to soak.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover the dish.
  6. Dot top with butter pieces and sprinkle extra sugar.
  7. Bake 35–40 minutes until puffed and golden.
  8. Optional: Sprinkle more sugar and broil to caramelize.
  9. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use brioche or challah for a richer texture.
  • Add orange zest or bourbon to enhance flavor.
  • Skip broiling and dust with powdered sugar for a quicker option.
  • Make dairy-free with plant-based milk and butter alternatives.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge up to 2 days.
  • Reheat at 325°F for 10 mins; broil briefly for crunch.
