Description

Ingredients

  • 1 pre-baked 9-inch pie crust
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the sugar, flour, and cocoa powder until well combined.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring a smooth mixture.
  4. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly add a small amount of the warm chocolate mixture to the yolks, whisking constantly to temper them.
  5. Pour the tempered yolks back into the saucepan with the remaining chocolate mixture, stirring continuously.
  6. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Pour the filling into the pre-baked pie crust, smoothing the top.
  9. Allow the pie to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until set.
  10. Serve chilled, optionally topped with whipped cream or meringue.
