Ingredients
Onion Rings
- 2 large white onions
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Garlic Butter Sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup butter
Instructions
- Prepare the onions. Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings about 1/2 inch wide. Carefully separate each ring from the layers to form individual onion rings suitable for stuffing.
- Stuff the onion rings. Take each onion ring and fill the hollow center with shredded mozzarella cheese, pressing slightly to ensure the cheese stays inside during frying.
- Set up the breading station. Place the flour in one shallow bowl. In a second bowl, beat the eggs until smooth. In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Coat the onion rings. Dip each stuffed onion ring first into the flour, making sure it is evenly coated. Next, dip it into the beaten eggs, letting excess drip off. Finally, coat the rings thoroughly in the breadcrumb-Parmesan mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
- Fry the onion rings. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the coated onion rings in batches, avoiding overcrowding, for 3-4 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Prepare the garlic butter sauce. In a small skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.
- Toss onion rings in garlic butter. Add the fried onion rings to the garlic butter and toss gently to coat them evenly with the flavorful sauce.
- Serve. Arrange the mozzarella-stuffed onion rings on a serving platter and serve immediately while warm and gooey inside.
Notes
- Ensure the oil temperature is maintained at 350°F to get crisp rings without absorbing excess oil.
- Use thick onion rings to hold the cheese better during frying.
- You can substitute mozzarella with other melting cheeses like provolone or gouda if desired.
- For a more intense garlic flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder to the breadcrumb mixture.
- Serve with marinara or ranch dipping sauce for extra flavor.
