M&M’s Peanut Butter Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting is a colorful, festive dessert perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or anytime you crave peanut butter and chocolate. This moist, rich peanut butter cake is topped with a creamy peanut butter frosting and loaded with crunchy, colorful M&M’s—making it a fun and crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup M&M’s, plus more for decoration
  • For the Frosting:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat butter and peanut butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar and beat until fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Fold in M&M’s. Divide batter evenly into prepared pans.
  7. Bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
  9. For frosting: Beat butter and peanut butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar gradually, then cream and vanilla. Beat until fluffy.
  10. Frost the top of one cake layer, stack the second layer, and frost the top and sides.
  11. Decorate with extra M&M’s as desired.

Notes

  • Use crunchy peanut butter for added texture.
  • Swap M&M’s with chocolate chips or chopped nuts.
  • Try different M&M’s flavors (peanut, caramel, pretzel) for variety.
  • Freeze unfrosted cake layers for up to 3 months.
