Description
A cozy dessert inspired by Jamie Oliver, combining the nostalgic flavor of apple pie with the soft texture of cake. It’s made with a yellow cake mix, spiced apples, and a buttery crumble topping.
Ingredients
- 1 box (425 g) yellow cake mix
- 1½ cups (360 ml) water
- ⅓ cup (80 ml) vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3 tbsp (45 g) brown sugar, packed
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) lemon juice
- ¾ cup (95 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup (115 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Grease a 9×13‑inch pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk cake mix, water, oil, and eggs until smooth. Spread batter evenly in the pan.
- In a separate bowl, toss apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread them over the batter.
- Mix flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Sprinkle topping over the apples.
- Bake 40–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean (a few moist crumbs are fine).
- Let cool completely in the pan before slicing. Optionally dust with powdered sugar or serve with ice cream.
Notes
- Use a mix of apple varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for best flavor.
- You can swap boxed cake mix with homemade yellow cake batter.
- Optional to peel apples—keeping skin adds rustic texture and nutrition.
- Tastes even better the next day after flavors meld.
