Description
A comforting twist on the classic sloppy joe, these French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes combine savory ground beef with caramelized onions and melted cheese on toasted buns.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 4–6 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
- 4–6 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly until golden brown and caramelized.
- Add minced garlic and cook for about a minute until fragrant.
- Add ground beef, break it apart, and cook until browned and fully cooked.
- Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Pour in beef broth and simmer until thickened.
- Toast hamburger buns. Spoon beef mixture onto bottom halves of buns.
- Top each with a slice of cheese and place the top bun over.
- Optional: Broil the assembled sloppy joes for 1 minute to melt the cheese.
Notes
- Use gruyère cheese for a richer, French onion soup flavor.
- Swap beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Store meat mixture and buns separately to avoid sogginess.
- Add red wine while caramelizing onions for deeper flavor.
