Description

This homemade vanilla ice cream is a rich, creamy treat made from scratch with real ingredients. It’s a classic dessert that’s perfect on its own or with a variety of toppings and mix-ins.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 large egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a bowl until pale and slightly thickened.
  2. In a saucepan, combine milk, cream, and salt; heat until just about to boil.
  3. Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract, and let it cool completely.
  6. Chill the custard in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
  7. Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze for a few hours until firm.
