Description

This hearty and comforting ground beef and cabbage recipe is a nostalgic dish inspired by classic country cooking. It combines tender cabbage, flavorful diced tomatoes, aromatic onions, and seasoned lean ground beef simmered together in a single pot for a wholesome, easy-to-make meal that’s perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 1 large head cabbage, finely chopped
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice
  • 1 onion, halved and thinly sliced

Meat

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10 preferred)

Seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Gather all the ingredients including the finely chopped cabbage, diced tomatoes with their juice, thinly sliced onion, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and lean ground beef to have everything ready before cooking.
  2. Start cooking the base: Place the cabbage, diced tomatoes with juice, sliced onion, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper into a Dutch oven or large pot. Heat over low heat and stir occasionally until the mixture just begins to simmer, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Add ground beef: Place the lean ground beef on top of the simmering cabbage and vegetable mixture without stirring it in immediately. Cover the pot with a lid to allow steam to cook the beef through gently.
  4. Simmer until done: Cook covered over low heat for approximately 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. During this time, the cabbage will become tender and the ground beef will cook thoroughly, absorbing flavors from the vegetables and seasonings.
  5. Serve: Once the beef is fully cooked and the cabbage tender, stir gently to combine all ingredients evenly. Serve hot alongside your favorite sides such as corn on the cob and cornbread for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Do not cook and drain the meat separately, as draining will remove much of the flavor.
  • Use 90/10 lean ground beef for the best balance of flavor and fat content.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with classic Southern sides like corn on the cob and cornbread.
