Description

French Onion Gnocchi is a one-skillet comfort dish combining the rich, savory flavors of French onion soup with tender potato gnocchi and melted Gruyère cheese.


Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb potato gnocchi, uncooked
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil and butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring often, until deeply caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Pour in red wine to deglaze the pan, simmer until reduced.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Stir in uncooked gnocchi and cook for 5 minutes until tender and coated in sauce.
  6. Sprinkle Gruyère cheese on top and place skillet under broiler until cheese is melted and golden.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian version.
  • Red wine can be replaced with broth or balsamic vinegar.
  • Add mushrooms or spinach for extra flavor and texture.
