Description
Dolly’s Chicken and Stuffing Casserole is a comforting, creamy, and flavorful dish combining tender shredded chicken, a rich creamy base, and a crispy stuffing topping. Perfect for weeknight dinners, potlucks, or holiday gatherings, this casserole is easy to prepare and can be made ahead of time for convenience.
Ingredients
Chicken Mixture
- 2–3 cups shredded cooked chicken (rotisserie or baked)
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 1/2 cup sour cream or mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup chicken broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
Stuffing Topping
- 1 box (6 oz) stuffing mix (traditional or cornbread)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Mix the Creamy Base: In a large bowl, thoroughly combine the shredded chicken, cream of chicken soup, sour cream (or mayonnaise), and chicken broth, stirring until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.
- Layer the Casserole: Evenly spread the chicken mixture into the prepared baking dish. Prepare the stuffing mix according to the package directions, but use slightly less water than recommended to keep the topping from becoming soggy.
- Add Stuffing: Spoon the prepared stuffing mixture evenly over the chicken base. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the stuffing to ensure a golden, crispy finish after baking.
- Bake: Place the casserole uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the stuffing topping is golden brown and the edges of the casserole are bubbling.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes after baking to set and improve the texture, then serve warm.
Notes
- You can prepare this casserole up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate it before baking to save time on the day of serving.
- For a festive holiday variation, substitute the chicken with leftover turkey and add dried cranberries into the stuffing for added flavor and texture.
- Consider using gluten-free stuffing mix or low-sodium chicken broth and soup options to accommodate dietary preferences or restrictions.
