Description

Blackberry Dumplings are a classic Southern dessert featuring fluffy dumplings simmered in a sweet, cinnamon-infused blackberry sauce. Best served warm with ice cream or whipped cream, this easy one-pan dessert is perfect for using fresh or frozen blackberries.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups blackberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a 9″ or 10″ cast iron skillet or large pot, combine blackberries, 1 cup sugar, water, lemon juice, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  2. Cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a simmer.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, salt, and 2 tbsp sugar.
  4. Add cold, cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and vanilla extract, then add to the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined.
  6. Drop tablespoon-sized portions of the dough into the simmering blackberry mixture, spacing them evenly.
  7. Cover the pot with a lid or foil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 12-14 minutes until dumplings are cooked through.
  8. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • You can use frozen blackberries without thawing.
  • Substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with lemon juice or vinegar if needed.
  • Do not lift the lid while simmering the dumplings to ensure proper cooking.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
