Description

These Baked Cheese Buns are soft, golden, and packed with gooey, melty cheese. Perfect as a side for soups, a cozy snack, or part of a brunch spread, these fluffy buns deliver bold cheesy flavor with every bite. Easy to customize with your favorite cheese or herbs, they’re a must-have comfort food that never disappoints.

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup + 2 ½ tablespoons lukewarm water
  • 2¾ tablespoons lukewarm milk
  • ¾ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
  • ½ tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ tablespoon soft butter
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 3½ ounces shredded cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or your favorite)
  • Egg Wash:
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Extras:
  • 23 tablespoons shredded cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Combine lukewarm water and milk in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast over and let sit for 5–10 minutes, then stir gently.
  2. Add flour, sugar, butter, and salt. Knead until the dough forms. Continue kneading for 5–7 minutes, then mix in shredded cheese until evenly incorporated.
  3. Shape dough into a smooth ball on a floured surface. Cover with a tea towel and let rest for 25 minutes.
  4. Divide dough into 6 pieces. Shape into balls and place on a baking sheet. Let rise covered in a warm place until doubled, about 1–2 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Brush buns with egg wash or milk and sprinkle with cheese.
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use different cheeses like mozzarella, Gruyère, or pepper jack for variety.
  • Add fresh herbs or spices (e.g., rosemary, chili flakes) for flavor twists.
  • Stuff each bun with cheese for an extra treat.
  • Store at room temp for 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.
  • Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5–10 minutes.
