This apple upside down cake is a cozy, spiced dessert topped with caramelized apples and a moist, buttery crumb. Easy to bake and beautiful to serve, it’s the perfect fall treat for gatherings, holidays, or a weekend baking project. A stunning apple dessert everyone will love!

Ingredients

  • For the topping:
  • Apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • For the cake:
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Butter (softened)
  • Granulated sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • Milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.
  2. Make the topping: Melt butter in a small pan, stir in brown sugar and cinnamon. Pour into prepared cake pan. Arrange apple slices over the sugar mixture in an even layer.
  3. Make the cake batter: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In another bowl, cream softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk into the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Pour batter over the apples and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool for 10–15 minutes, then carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for best texture.
  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for crunch.
  • Spice it up with ginger or allspice in the batter.
  • Try a mix of apples and pears for variety.
  • For a shortcut, use a spiced cake mix as the base.
