Description
Tender apple slices cooked in butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla to create a warm glazed treat.
Ingredients
- 5 Granny Smith apples
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ cup light or dark brown sugar, packed
- 1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into wedges about ½ inch thick.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat the apples.
- Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes, until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
- Remove from heat and gently stir in the vanilla extract. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheat in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave until warmed through.
- You can leave the peels on for a more rustic texture (slice thinner so they soften).
- Any firm apple variety works (e.g. Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady), though Granny Smith is recommended for balance.
- For a thinner sauce, add a few tablespoons of water or apple cider in the last few minutes of cooking.
