Description

Tender apple slices cooked in butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla to create a warm glazed treat.

Ingredients

  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup light or dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into wedges about ½ inch thick.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add the apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat the apples.
  4. Continue cooking over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 10–15 minutes, until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
  5. Remove from heat and gently stir in the vanilla extract. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave until warmed through.
  • You can leave the peels on for a more rustic texture (slice thinner so they soften).
  • Any firm apple variety works (e.g. Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady), though Granny Smith is recommended for balance.
  • For a thinner sauce, add a few tablespoons of water or apple cider in the last few minutes of cooking.
